September 2001
By Bob England
THIS IS THE
DATE that will ever be
remembered. It is, of course, the date that the terrorist attack was made on the
World Trade Towers in New York, and overshadowed everything else.
If this scenerio
had been offered as a plot for a book or a film, it may have been seen as too
far fetched to be believable, and it is this incredibility that make it all the
more horrifying; the very fact that such a carnage could have been so
cold-bloodedly planned and executed by human beings against others.
As I write, the
latest count of those dead or still missing stands at 6,250 (including over 200
British people) and I am sure that all members of the Market Harborough Branch
of the Royal British Legion will wish me on their behalf, to record our
sincerest condolences to all those families who lost their love ones and friends
in such harrowing circumstances. ( A tribute was paid as part of the Act of Homage at the September Branch meeting)
I will not write much more about this tragedy because I have no doubt you will all have been following the news media reports and do not need it all repeated here. Suffice to say that retribution seems inevitable and we must all hope and pray that what will ensue will not cost thousands more innocent lives.
